This was a fun experiment in printmaking! We took the 'Inari Shrine' wood blocks, and used different pigments to print the same scene, but this time in Autumn!

Autumn is my preferred time to visit Japan. The bright red maples put on a dazzling show, and the temperature is perfect for hiking in the mountains. 

I'm also a big fan of Japanese soups and stews, (hotpot, oden, etc) and those just taste better in the chilly months!

The fox statue you see here commonly appears in pairs, guarding shrines to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, agriculture and fertility. Inari shrines are very common in Japan, both in cities as well as the countryside. 

We're proud to showcase this print, which was designed by Jed Henry and created by apprentice printmaker Stephen Winiecki. You can see more of Stephen's work here. Stephen is a talented craftsman - for this print he even figured out how to add a little stony texture to the fox statue. Special effects! 

The paper measures 13.5 x 17 cm (about 5 x 7 inches).

Each print is signed by Jed Henry and numbered.

The color was applied in the traditional Japanese method, with hand-carved blocks, ground pigments, and hand printing on handmade paper.
