'Snow on Water' Woodblock Print
This is a handmade reproduction, originally designed in the early 1900s by Kawase Hasui. It's the perfect size for holiday gift giving!
Kawase Hasui is one of the most famous names in the Shinhanga tradition of printmaking, which came into being as a reaction to the proliferation of western art and photography. This Shinhanga style depicts much more realistic scenes reminiscent of photos, while still retaining the charm and unique features of earlier woodblock prints, such as the use of bokashi gradations and the three-dimensionality of the final print.
We're proud to showcase this print, which was crafted by apprentice printmaker Stephen Winiecki. You can see more of Stephen's work here.
The paper measures 11 x 16 cm (4.25 x 6.25 inches).
The color was applied in the traditional Japanese method, with hand-carved blocks, ground pigments, and hand printing on handmade paper.
We hope you'll support new carver/printers like Stephen by collecting their prints.
Thank you!
