'The Destined One' Giclee Print
My first exposure to Sun Wukong was the graphic novel 'American Born Chinese' by Gene Luen Yang. This heartfelt comic uses the story of the Monkey King as a powerful metaphor to explore what it's like to grow up Asian American. I love this comic!
My second encounter with Sun Wukong was a series of prints by Yoshitoshi, one of my favorite Japanese print designers. Yoshitoshi designed this print in 1889. It is just one of many Monkey King illustrations he created during his career.
I was VERY excited when Black Myth was teased to the public in 2020. After waiting four years, the game did not disappoint! The environments took my breath away. The characters and story are subtle and intricate. And I just stared at all the cool armor sets for HOURS.
I hope my humble homage to Sun Wukong, and also The Destined One, comes anywhere close to encapsulating this great story.
The caption says 齊天大聖, which means 'The Great Sage, Equal to Heaven'. Sun Wukong used this title to describe himself in the 16h century novel 'Journey to the West'.
The small red stamp says 天命人, which means 'The Destined One' - the name given to the monkey protagonist in the video game.
NOTE - You can choose between two paper types for your print:
1) Handmade Japanese Paper: Created by the Kikuchi Studio in Ehime Japan, this paper features a lovely mulberry texture and rough deckled edges. The overall effect makes our giclée prints look like real historical Japanese prints. I'm very proud of these!
2) Western Paper: This is a high quality 80 lb cover paper, similar to hot press watercolor paper. My art prints look stunning on its smooth, matte finish. This is the paper I usually bring to conventions, so if you have purchased art from me at a live event, you probably have this paper style.
Every print is signed by the artist.
Measures 12x17 inches.
This print looks great in three standard 16 x 20 frames (US, Canada) or 40 x 50 cm (everywhere else).
